Milestone!  We now have 200 subscribers to this newsletter!  Thanks to Toby MacLeod, CEO of STRADEGY.CA who sponsored both the EV Society & Sustainable Cobourg (SC) at Rotary Ribfest Aug 12-14, we were able to pitch our tent and talk to hundreds of people about electric vehicles and sustainability.  20 people signed up to receive our EV Northumberland newsletter and a whole bunch more learned about sustainability in Cobourg. We would not have been there without Toby’s generous support.

Battery recycling – During the Ribfest EV & SC event, a number of people asked if the “dead” batteries end up in landfills.  Without going into the details about repurposing the batteries as grid backups and the value of the materials for reusing them in new batteries, here’s the EV Society Canada Talks EVs webinar from May 2021 about Li Cycle in Kingston that currently recycles lithium batteries https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4OaryfviR6w.  “A fascinating look at the incredible potential of recycling of lithium batteries. Ajay Kochhar shows how his company is preparing to take on the tsunami of automotive batteries that will one day reach end of life. Ajay explains how these spent batteries are extremely valuable and how we must ‘hang on’ to their precious components by practicing ‘urban mining’ in a sustainable and profitable fashion”.

Tax write-off for EVs used in business.  if they use their EVs for business, they can write off 100% capital cost allowance in the FIRST YEAR of ownership?  This government program ends at year end 2023.  Repeated from last month, just a reminder

Participate in an EV charger reliability study!  Alex D’Alton from the University of Waterloo is conducting an EV charging study and hopes you will join a small group of volunteers to work on the project. He is replicating the “Reliability of Open Public Electric Vehicle Direct Current Fast Chargers” study in partnership with their author from Cool The Earth.  His study will be conducted in Ontario, with hopes of expanding across Canada later this year.

The idea is simple: you and your EV will visit public [DC] fast-charging stations. You will test the plugs at the station, record whether they are working, and how easy they are to use! He needs volunteers from our chapter to test out a few stations. [Currently at Pt. Hope ONroute 401 and Petro-Can on White Street Cobourg].  Sign up as a volunteer here:
