Scientists have been telling us for over 5 decades that our planet is deteriorating as the result of unsustainable human actions. We only have this planet to provide us with everything we and all other life forms need to survive; we must reconsider our connection with it.
Although many of us enjoy countless benefits that our modern way of life has provided, these have come at a high cost. Hundreds, if not thousands, of species, have become extinct in just 5 decades.

The ecosystems where many species flourished have collapsed because they were often not considered significant. Our consumerism has created an enormous burden of waste as plastics choke our rivers, streams and oceans. The oceans are acidifying. Heat is not escaping the atmosphere because the Greenhouse Gases that have been continuously created through our dependence on fossil fuels have insulated our planet. Our growing seasons have changed, thus challenging food security. Climate has changed, creating uncertainty and formidable infrastructure costs.

Unsustainable human actions have created unstable planet reactions. Yet, we know now that by creating a balance among environmental stewardship concerns, social responsibility, and economic resilience, we can make sustainable decisions. These decisions will make a difference in mitigating the continuing devastation of our planet. If we were the cause of this imbalance, then surely we can be the cure.
Our connection to Mother Earth has been very fragile since the outbreak of the pandemic.

It’s time to show some love and celebrate our connection to Mother Earth. Let’s re-connect and rebalance ourselves to her needs.

Sustainable Cobourg invites you to join us for one or all of our Earth Week 2021 activities below running from Monday April 19 to Friday April 23.
